Entrevista Exclusiva con Amanda Tapping: «AMO al personaje de Sam Carter y al equipo de Stargate»

Entrevista en exclusiva a Amanda Tapping, protagonista de Stargate SG-1.

Aquí os traemos nuestra primera entrevista en exclusiva, una nueva sección donde intentaremos traeros a vuestros actores favoritos de series. En esta primera entrevista tenemos a Amanda Tapping, actriz que hemos visto en la saga televisiva ‘Stargate SG-1‘, en ‘Sanctuary‘ o recientemente en ‘Supernatural‘. Sin más dilación aquí os dejamos la entrevista.

En Tu Pantalla: Actualmente te podemos ver en Supernatural con un personaje bastante misterioso. ¿Qué podemos esperar de el y su “relación” con Castiel?
Amanda Tapping: ¡Sinceramente no lo sé! Recibo los guiones muy poco tiempo antes de grabar. Se que saldré en dos episodios más, pero no sé qué pasará.
Es muy excitante ya que no es un personaje que pueda interpretar muy a menudo. Trabajar con Misha Collins es una maravilla.

Respecto a ‘Primeval: New World’, ¿cuesta dirigir escenas en las que «no hay nada» y luego se incluirán digitalmente los dinosaurios?
A.T.: La verdad es que no. ‘Primeval’ tiene un magnífico equipo de efectos especiales y Mark Savela esta siempre que vamos a grabar con dichos efectos. Además tenemos a Chuck Campbell, que se pone un traje verde e «interpreta» a los dinosaurios.
Es verdaderamente divertido. En ‘Sanctuary’ grababa mucho con pantalla verde, estoy bastante acostumbrada a grabar cosas que no existen hasta que se añaden digitalmente.

Cuando comenzó ‘Sanctuary’ como una webserie, ¿pensaste que llegaría a ser una serie con 4 temporadas a sus espaldas?
A.T.: No.  Teníamos una visión muy diferente al principio. Pero una vez fuimos elegidos para pasar a televisión fue todo perfecto. Me hubiera encantado que durara más.

¿Dirección o actuación, últimamente te vemos en ambos papeles pero cual de los dos te gusta más?
A.T.: Amo ambas cosas. Son muy diferentes. Y estoy definitivamente disfrutando mucho como directora. Pero no me gustaría elegir entre ambas cosas.

¿Tras tu larga trayectoria en ciencia ficción con ‘Stargate SG-1’, ‘Stargate Atlantis’, ‘Sanctuary’ y ‘Supernatural’ ya estás acostumbrada a rodar en esas circunstancias?
A.T.: Sí, pienso que la ciencia ficción es perfecta para mi. Pero todavía creo en contar historias, da igual las circunstancias. Estamos intentando contar historias con personajes interesantes y no importa el género.

Hagamos un viaje en el tiempo. ¿Cómo fue comenzar con ‘Stargate SG-1’? ¿Fue difícil conseguir el papel?
A.T.: Fue muy buena experiencia. Participé en el casting en Toronto y me pusieron en una lista corta. Les mandé una cinta con mis trabajos previos y fui una de las tres personas a las que mandaron a Los Ángeles para el último casting. ¡Esa parte fue divertidísima! Pude actuar frente a Richard Dean Anderson. Me codeé con Michael Shanks y Christopher Judge. Fue muy divertido. ¡Lo más duro fue la espera hasta que me dijeron que había conseguido el papel!

¿En algún momento pensaste en dejar ‘Stargate SG-1’ para comenzar otros proyectos?
A.T.: Había momentos en que me planteaba si no debería haber estado haciendo otra cosa. Pero AMO al personaje de Sam Carter y al equipo de Stargate. Era un trabajo de ensueño en muchos aspectos. No fue hasta el final, cuando dejé Stargate Atlantis para hacer Sanctuary que sentí de verdad que estaba lista para un nuevo reto.

¿Te gustaba más interpretar a Sam Carter replicante o la genuina?
A.T.: La Carter Replicante era muy divertida de interpretar. Muy diferente e intensa. Pero siempre he preferido a Sam.

¿Te gustaría volver a interpretar a Sam Carter y volver con el equipo de Stargate?
A.T.: Por supuesto. Fue un momento muy especial y una serie muy especial. Pero me temo que su tiempo ha pasado ya.

¿Crees que existe la posibilidad de que volvamos a ver Stargate, ya sea como serie o película?
A.T.: Sinceramente, no lo sé. Tiene mucho potencial, pero no volvería para hacer una versión más baja de algo de lo que estamos tan orgullosos.

En Stargate ya teníamos dosis de comedia, pero ¿Cómo ha sido trabajar en «Space Milkshake» la comedia espacial?
A.T.: Reía todos los días. El elenco era fantástico y nos divertíamos mucho. ¡Me resulta increíble que pudieran montar una película entera con lo mucho que nos reímos rodándola!

¿Cuál de los personajes que has interpretado prefieres? ¿Cuál ha sido el más difícil de interpretar?
A.T.: Me encantan todos ellos por diversas razones. Obviamente Sam Carter es parte de mí, y fue perfecta para mí en aquel momento de mi vida. Crecimos juntas. Helen Magnus es también un personaje fenomenal, y de nuevo fue perfecto para el momento en que me encontraba. Fue también de los más difíciles, por ser tan excéntrica y tan diferente a mi misma.

En España tenemos varias convenciones de ciencia ficción, han pasado por aquí actores de Stargate como Alexis Cruz, David Nykl o Peter Williams. ¿Te podremos ver pronto en España?
A.T.: ¡¡¡¡¡Me ENCANTARÍA visitar España!!!!! ¡En cualquier momento!

¿Qué podemos esperar de Amanda Tapping? ¿Algún proyecto próximamente?
A.T.: Aun estoy rodando Supernatural. Y también sido dirigiendo. Ahora mismo acabo de terminar de dirigir un episodio de Arctic Air. Así que ya veremos qué viene luego. ¡Quizás es momento de crear una nueva serie!

1.- Currently we can watch you on ‘Supernatural’ paying a misterious character. What can we expect from her and her ‘relationship’ with Castiel?
I honestly don’t know! I get the scripts really close to the time that we film. I know I have two more episodes coming up, but I don’t know what is going to happen.
It’s very exciting because it’s a character I don’t often get to play. and Misha Collins is a real delight to work with.

2.- Regarding Primeval New World, is it hard to direct scenes where actually ‘there is nothing’ and the the dinosaurs are included digitally at the postproduction?
Not really.   Primeval has an amazing visual effects team and Mark Savela was there every time I was shooting those elements.  Plus our stand in Chuck Campbell put on a grey body suit and «played» the dinosaurs.
It was actually really fun.  Having shot a lot of green screen on Sanctuary, I am pretty used to filming things that don’t exist until after the fact.

3.- When Sanctuary started as a webseries, did you think it could end up being a complete 4-season series?
No.  We had a very different vision for the show in the beginning.  But once we went to television it was such a prefect fit.  I wish it had lasted longer.

4.- Directing or acting? Lately we can find you on both sides but, which one do you enjoy the most?
I love both.  They are very different.  And I am definitely enjoying getting more acknowledgment as a director.  But I’d hate to have to choose.

5.- After your long career on Sci-fi shows like Stargate SG-1, Stargate Atlantis, Sanctuary and Supernatural, are you used to shoot on this ‘fantastic’ circumstances?
Yes, I think SciFi is a natural fit for me.  But I still believe it’s about telling stories no matter what the circumstances.  We are trying to tell compelling stories with interesting characters and it doesn’t matter what the genre is.

6.- Let’s travel in time, how was your experience beginning with Stargate SG-1? Was it hard to get the role?
I had a great experience. I auditioned in Toronto and was put on a short list.  I sent  a demo tape of my work and was one of three people sent to LA for the final audition.  This part was really fun!
I got to act opposite Richard Dean Anderson.  I hung out with Michael Shanks and Christopher Judge. It was a fun time.
The hardest part was waiting to find out if I got the part!

7.- When you were on Stargate, did you ever think about leaving the role to begin other different projects?
There were times when I wondered if I should be doing something else.  But, I LOVE Sam Carter and the Stargate team.  It was a dream job in so many ways.
It wasn’t until the end when I left Stargate Atlantis to do Sanctuary that I felt I was truly ready for a new challenge.

8.- Did you enjoyed playing ‘Replicator Carter’? Did you prefer to play her, or the original Sam Carter?
Replicator Carter was so much fun.  So different, so intense. But I much preferred Sam.

9.- If you were given the chance, would you like to play Sam Carter again with all the Stargate crew and cast?
Sure.  It was such a special time and a special show.  But I fear that it’s time has passed.

10.- Do you think there’s any chance we could see some more ‘Stargate’ as a new series or movie?
I honestly don’t know.  There are certainly so many possibilities for the show, but I wouldn’t want to go back and do a lesser version of something we are all so proud of.

11.- On Stargate we already had some dosis of comedy but how was your experience on an actual space comedy as «Space Milkshake?
I laughed everyday.  It was a fantastic cast and we had so much fun.  Hard to believe they could edit together a movie with all the laughing we did!

12.- Which one of all the characters you have played do you prefer? And which one was the most difficult to play?
I loved all of them for different reasons.  Obviously Sam Carter is such a huge part of me and she was perfect for me at that time in my life.  We really grew up together.  Helen Magnus is a phenomenal character.
And again perfect for this time in my life.  She was also one the most difficult because she is so eccentric and so different from me.

13.- In Spain we have several sci-fi conventions, and some actors have come to them recently, such as Alexis Cruz, David Nykl or Peter Williams. Could we see you around soon?
I would LOVE to come to Spain!!!!!  Anytime!

14.- What can we expect from Amanda Tapping in the near future? Do you have new projects in mind?
I am still shooting Supernatural.  I am also directing.  i just finished directing an episode of Arctic Air. So we shall see what comes next.
Perhaps it’s time to create another show!!
